United States 1-1 Uruguay: Morris helps hosts come from behind

Jordan Morris second-half goal helped the United States to a 1-1 friendly draw against Uruguay in St Louis on Tuesday.

Coming off two straight losses, USA managed to avoid defeat as Morris cancelled out Brian Rodriguez s 50th-minute opener at Busch Stadium.

It was a fortunate equaliser for USA, who had squandered their best opportunities during the first half before falling behind.

Brian Rodriguez s first international goal had Uruguay – without the likes of Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani and Diego Godin – on track, but Morris levelled for Gregg Berhalter s men.

201 7 has scored for the for the first time since scoring the game-winning goal in the 2017 Gold Cup Final. Comeback.

Premier League´s most creative player, best dribbler – why Real Madrid want to replace Bale with Haz

Real Madrid announced the arrival of Chelsea forward Eden Hazard on Friday to bring an end to the long-running transfer saga and potentially spell the end of Gareth Bale s time at the club.

Los Blancos have handed over a reported initial fee of €100million for the 28-year-old, who outlined his intention to leave the London club after scoring a brace in the Europa League final win over Arsenal.

The Belgium international joined Chelsea from Lille in 2012 and swiftly adapted, before becoming undoubtedly one of the English top-flight’s best players.

Hazard will be remembered as one of the club s true icons alongside John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba, such is the impact he has had in his seven years.

And his arrival at the Bernabeu could push B…

Jovic ´couldn´t have imagined a better comeback´ with Eintracht after Madrid struggles

Luka Jovic revelled in his two-goal return for Eintracht Frankfurt after struggling at LaLiga champions Real Madrid.

Jovic re-joined Eintracht on loan until the end of the season, having endured a difficult start to his Madrid career – the Serbia international only scored twice in 32 appearances under Zinedine Zidane in the Spanish capital, where he arrived for €60million in 2019.

But a return to Frankfurt appears to be the perfect tonic for Jovic, who came off the bench and scored twice in 28 minutes as Eintracht defeated Schalke 3-1 in the Bundesliga on Sunday.

Jovic matched his Madrid tally in the stunning cameo for Eintracht, where the 23-year-old netted 27 goals in 2018-19 before making the move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Amazing feeling! Victor…

Spain break World Cup passing record

Spain set a new record for the most successful passes in a World Cup match as they were taken to extra time by Russia in the last 16.

An early Sergei Ignashevich own goal had Spain on track to reach the quarter-finals, but Artem Dzyuba levelled from the penalty spot.

Argentina held the previous record of 703 successful passes in a World Cup match against Greece in 2010, although Opta has only collected this data since 1966.

Spain s 779 passes smashed that record but they were unable to break the determined hosts down at the Luzhniki Stadium.

From Common to Pogba: The evolution of world record transfer fees

Football is a sport awash with cash, but Paul Pogba s impending transfer from Juventus to Manchester United for an initial £93million (€110m)  potentially rising to almost £102m (€120m) sends it into a new era.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger branded reports of the fee completely crazy last week, while Borussia Dortmund head coach Thomas Tuchel claimed prices were out of control .

Nevertheless, United have paid a nine-figure sum to secure Pogba s return to the Premier League, signalling their intent to return to being the greatest force in England football.

Here, we look at the evolution of the world transfer record:

Kimmich counters Hoeness criticism of Germany goalkeeper debate

Joshua Kimmich has defended Marc-Andre ter Stegen and the German Football Association (DFB) from Uli Hoeness criticism but insists Manuel Neuer is right to be considered the national team s number one.

Bayern Munich president Hoeness hit out at the federation for a perceived failure to support 2014 World Cup winner Neuer in the debate over Germany s goalkeeper spot.

Neuer s nearest positional rival, Barcelona s Ter Stegen, had expressed frustration with a lack of international opportunities, which prompted a public exchange between the pair.

The Bayern star sought to quell the tension last week and club team-mate Kimmich joined him in smoothing over relations as he sympathised with Ter Stegen.

There was nothing bad about what Marc said, Kimmich told Ge…

Atletico Madrid 1 Eibar 1: Garces rescues draw for Simeone´s men

Borja Garces scored with almost the last kick of the game to secure a 1-1 draw for an underwhelming Atletico Madrid against Eibar at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday.

The visitors looked like they had snatched maximum points after 87 minutes when Sergei Enrich prodded home from close range.

Substitute Garces – making his LaLiga debut – spared Diego Simeone s blushes, though, lashing in from 15 yards, just moments after Diego Godin had thundered a header against the crossbar.

Their failure to adequately bounce back from defeat to Celta Vigo before the international break means that Simeone s side face the prospect of falling seven points behind early pacesetters Barcelona and Real Madrid by the end of the weekend.

After a sluggish start, in which Ei…

Today at the Women’s World Cup: England, USA and five-star Japan claim victories

A bumper Saturday at the Women’s World Cup saw four games played across Australia and New Zealand.

World champions the United States and Euro 2022 winners England started their quest to lift the trophy with wins as Haiti and Vietnam were beaten.

Denmark and Japan also picked up victories over China and Zambia, respectively.

Here the PA news agency takes a look at all of the action.

Holders on form

Two first-half goals from Sophia Smith got the United States’ defence of the Women’s World Cup under way with a 3-0 win over Vietnam in Auckland.

But the tournament favourites were wasteful in front of goal, missing a penalty as they failed to turn their dominance – 28 shots to none – into a bigger win against outclassed but determined opposit…

Is Sanchez another Sissoko? Tottenham record signings haven´t always fared well

Tottenham have waited several weeks to make a splash in the transfer window and, on Friday, they did it in style.

Mauricio Pochettino s side smashed their transfer record to sign Davinson Sanchez from Ajax for a fee that could rise to €42million.

The 21-year-old won plenty of admirers for his form in the Eredivisie and Europa League last season, with Barcelona reportedly interested in the past, but spending such a sum on a relatively inexperienced defender still poses a risk – especially when you consider Spurs success rate when it comes to big-money moves.

Too many of the biggest signings in their history have proved to be more of a famous flop than a fan favourite, although there are one or two gems in their top 10.

These are the names Sanchez has …

Leicestershire-born Ashleigh Plumptre out to beat England at Women’s World Cup

Ex-England youth international Ashleigh Plumptre insists it was a simple choice to switch allegiances to Nigeria, who on Monday night could knock her native country out of the World Cup.

Leicestershire born and raised Plumptre, 25, has represented England from under-15 to under-23 level, but in January 2022 received FIFA’s approval to join the Super Falcons.

Plumptre, who three weeks ago left Leicester after making 79 appearances for the Women’s Super League side, grew up with a half-Nigerian dad whose own father was born in Lagos.

The defender said: “For me, it wasn’t difficult because I knew exactly what I wanted from football and I think that just came down from understanding who I am. On my journey, I’ve learned more about myself and I know what I w…
